Why you can't sleep after night shift (and how to fix it)
One of the most frustrating parts of night shift is this: You finish exhausted… and then you can't sleep. You get home, lie down, and instead of switching off, your mind is still active. You might fall asleep briefly, wake up early, or just sit there wondering why your body won't do what it's clearly asking for. I remember early on thinking something was wrong with how I was handling it. But this is one of the most common problems with night shift. And it's not a lack of discipline. It's how your body is wired.

Why you're exhausted at 3am but wide awake at 9am
I used to get so confused by this on night shift. At 3am I'd be struggling to stay awake. Head nodding, constant yawning, sometimes even feeling like my vision was blurring slightly. It felt like my body was shutting down. Then a few hours later, nothing had really changed, but suddenly I felt alert again. Wide awake. Functional. Same shift. Same fatigue. Completely different feeling. That's not random. That's your biology.

How fatigue affects decision making on shift
Have you ever felt completely fine… but then made a really simple mistake? You forget something obvious. Say something that doesn't quite land. Miss a step you normally wouldn't. And it makes you pause and think, what was that? I've had that happen more times than I'd like to admit. Especially on longer shifts or after multiple back-to-back jobs, I've found myself forgetting simple things, losing track of details, or double-checking tasks I'd normally do without thinking. At first, I brushed it off. But once I started paying attention, I realised it wasn't random. It showed up far more often when I was: • Sleep deprived • Mentally overloaded • Coming off high-intensity work That's when I started looking deeper into what fatigue actually does to performance.

Why how you feel isn't your real fatigue level
Have you ever felt completely fine… but deep down you know you shouldn't? Or the opposite. You feel terrible, exhausted, flat… but you're still functioning better than you expected. That disconnect is something I've noticed a lot working shift work. How you feel in the moment isn't always a reliable indicator of how fatigued you actually are. There are so many things that can change how you feel throughout the day: • What and when you eat • Caffeine intake • Alcohol • Sunlight and weather • Social interaction • Stress levels • Workload • Physical activity • Even just a short rest or break Your body is constantly adjusting. You can feel alert one minute, flat the next, then suddenly switched on again. Humans are incredibly good at adapting in the short term. But that doesn't mean your underlying fatigue has changed.
